Un megavatio es la unidad de potencia que equivale a un millón de vatios o a mil kilovatios. Es representado como MW y se utiliza para medir potencias de gran tamaño como las utilizadas por grandes motores o generadores eléctricos.
El megavatio/hora es una unidad de potencia utilizada normalmente para medir solo grandes potencias ya que puede llegar a equivaler a más de 300 viviendas. Teniendo en cuenta que un megavatio equivale a un millón de vatios, el megavatio hora es, por lo tanto, la unidad de medida que se utiliza normalmente para calcular precios más propios del mercado mayorista.
Por lo tanto, el megavatio hora no será la forma en la que se representará el consumo eléctrico de una vivienda ya que el consumo de un inmueble medio no suele superar los 300 kilovatios al día, una cantidad muy inferior a la de un solo megavatio.
En la actualidad la factura de la luz de una vivienda suele venir representada en kilovatios hora (kWh), teniendo en cuenta la cantidad de voltios que una vivienda puede consumir por hora. Sin embargo, a la hora de medir grandes potencias como las del mercado mayorista, es necesario hacer uso del MWh ya que equivale a un millón de vatios.
Al ser una cantidad representada tan grande, su uso resulta mucho más cómodo en sectores y ámbitos donde el consumo energético es mucho más grande que el de una vivienda normal. De hecho, para poder comprender más fácilmente la magnitud de un MWh, un megavatio podemos compararlo con la cantidad energética que alrededor de 330 viviendas pueden utilizar en una hora.
Sin embargo, a nivel personal es importante tener en cuenta el precio del MWh ya que, si se cuenta con una tarifa PVPC, el coste del Kwh dependerá del precio que el MWh tenga en el sistema eléctrico impuesto por el Ministerio de Industria.
